The complexity approach is an evidence-based intervention for children with moderate to severe consistent phonological disorder. It is designed to improve the efficiency of intervention. The approach is based on the principle that selecting targets for therapy which are more complex e.g., phonemes that the child has low stimulability for, are later acquired etc. drives wider generalisation and change across the child’s speech sound system than selecting targets typically associated with traditional criteria for target selection such as ease of stimulability and earlier acquisition (Gierut and Champion 2001, Storkel 2018).
