Phonetic Transcription and Speech Analysis Up-date, and Evidence-based Practice in Clinical Phonology (hosted by the CEC for Northern Irish SLTs)

This course will cover two days. In day one, we will focus on revision of phonetic transcription using the IPA considering single sound, single word and connected speech levels. Reaching differential diagnosis of subtypes of speech sound disorder in children will be considered in light of phonetic and phonological analyses of speech data collected during child speech assessment. Finally we will begin to review the theory and evidence-base for three direct output approaches for children with phonological disorder.

In day two, we will build on the learning from day one and concentrate on the three phonological approaches of interest: conventional minimal pairs, multiple oppositions and the complexity approach. We will spend time applying these approaches to several case studies to support application of evidence to practice.
